nervous system Flashcards
CNS
includes brain and spinal cord
brain
processes info, source of thoughts, emotions, and memories
spinal cord
connects brain to rest of body; controls reflexes
peripheral Nervous system
includes cranial and spinal nerves and theri branches. Sensory receptors gather info about enviro; motor neurons control muscle movement
peripheral nerves
take in information for the brain and send info out for motor output
nervous system pathway
sensory input, integration, motor output, and effector
neuron
single cell that transmits signals. Dendrite -> cell body -> axon
neurotransmitters
send messages from axon of one neuron to the dendrite of another or to an effector
cerebrum
most superficial, “seat of intellegince” and used for high level thinking
frontal lobe
motor function, problem solving, speech production, mood, aggression
parietal lobe
sensory info (temp, touch, pressure)
temporal lobe
hearing, motor speech, long trerm memory
occipital lobe
vision, dreaming
cerebellum
(basic functions) controls balance and muscle coordination
brain stem
connects spinal cord to brain and relays info. Controls involuntary responses such as heart rate and breathing. Plays a role in arousal and conciiousness
