Nervous system Flashcards
What are the two man components of the nervous system.
- Central nervous system
- Peripheral nervous system
What is the peripheral nervous system
All nerves in our body outside the brain and the spinal cord are known collectively as the PNS, its main function is to relay nerve impuleses from the CNS ro the rest of the body.
What is the somatic nervous system (SNS)
- Direct voluntary movment of the skeletal muscles and direct our movments from the brain
- Transmit and recieve info from the senses such as visual info from the eyes and auditory info from the ears
What is the autonomic nervous system (ANS)
- Responsible for functions that keep the body in a stable state (eg- controling heart rate)
- Many of its functions are automatic
- There are two branches ; the parasympathetic branch and the parasympathetic branch
The sympathetic branch
When exposed to a threat this branch is activated and prepares the body for rapid action. It involves physiological changes which prepar the body for activity, it also slows down other nonn essential activities that consumae energy.
Parasympathetic branch
Is involved when the body is trying to store and conserve resourses once emergancy has passed. Returns a body to a state of relaxation and decreases bodily activities after activation from the sympathetic branch
