NERVOUS SYSTEM Flashcards
What do receptors do?
They detect stimuli, through groups of cells in the sense organs (rods and cones in the eye)
What do effectors do?
Cells that bring a response to stimuli - muscle cells and cells in glands (muscle cells contract, glands secrete hormones)
What do receptors do?
Communicate with effectors through the nervous system
What is the CNS made of? What does it do?
The brain and the spinal cord
It co-ordinate responses to stimuli
What are the 3 types of neurons?
Sensory neurone
Relay neurone
Motor neurone
What is a synapse?
A connection between 2 neurones
When stimulated the first neurone releases neurotransmitters
These diffuse across the synapse to the next neurone
That stimulates a response in the next neurone
The neurotransmitters are broken down by enzymes in the 2nd neurone
What is the entire reflext arc?
1 - When a receptor recieves a stimuli, an impulse is sent from the sensory neurone to the CNS
2 - The CNS passes on the message to a relay neurone
3 - This relay neurone relays an impulse to the correct motor neurone
4 - this impulse travels from the motor neurone to the effector
5 - a response is stimulated in the effector
