Nervous System Flashcards
(17 cards)
What 2 division make up the nervous system and what do they contain?
Central Nervous System - Brain/Spinal Cord Peripheral Nervous System - Nerves and Ganglia
What makes up the peripheral nervous system?
Nerves inside and outside the brain and spinal cord
How many nerves in the peripheral nervous system?
31 spinal nerve pairs and 12 cranial nerve pairs
What does the autonomic function of the PNS do?
Keep us alive - breathing, digestion - increases if we need it.
What does the saggital anatomical plane look at the brain?
ear on.
What does the parasympathetic function of the PNS do?
Lowers heart rate, respiration, BP
What does the coronal anatomical plane look at the brain?
Face on
What does the tranverse anatomical plane look at the brain?
Head down
What is double dissociation?
Increase in skill functioning to the detriment of another i.e motor skills and perceptual skills in dementia.
What’s the difference between the mind and the brain?
The mind is a product of the brain.
What are the three main approaches to studying the brain?
Cognitive psychology (networks of neurons), cognitive neuroscience (imaging, more technical brain activity, cognitive neuropsychology (experimental clinical approach - deficits/impairments).
A

Rostral
B

Doral (superior)
C

Dorsal (posterior)
D

Ventral (anterior)
