NETWORKING Flashcards
What are two advantages of star and ring topology
Star:
Advantages:
* Easy to manage and troubleshoot
* Improved performance and isolated device functionality
Disadvantages:
* If the central server, or hub fails the whole network fails
* It is expensive to set up
Ring:
Advantages:
* Efficient data transfer with minimized collision
* It is very scalable
Disadvatages:
* If a single computer fails the whole network fails
* It is difficult to expand the network
Why is it important to layer a network?
- It allows the network to be broken down into seperate layers it with its own functionality
- It helps in troubleshooting as problems could be isolated to specific layers
Differenciate between the TCP/IP model and the OSI model.
**Number of layers: **
TCP has 4 (Network, Internet, Transport and Application), OSI has 7
Layer Functionaliy:
TCP/IP combines multiple functionaliies into single layers, OSI layers each have a specific funcitonaliy
Focus
TCP focuses on the intergration of specific protocols, while OSI focuses on conceptual understanding and the provision of a reference framework
Acronym: NFL
Differenciate between UDP and TCP
TCP is a connection oriented protocol that ensures realiable and ordered packet dillivery, while UDP is Connetionell protocol that provides fast packet dillevey without ensuring it being ordered or reliable
What is data encapsulation?
It is the process of adding protocol specific headers and trailers to data as it moves down the layers of the OSI model. Here every layer ecapsulates the data adding a header to it, as it moves from the Application layer down to the Physical, except the session and Presentation layers
List two internet options provided by an ISP
- Digital Subscriber Line
- Optic Fibre
which host address will are remote host use to communicate with all host in a network?
The broadcast address, or the last host
