Networks Flashcards
Switch
A switch, in the context of networking, is a high-speed device that receives incoming data packets and redirects them to their destination on a local area network (LAN).BRIEF: It connects devices together within a network.
Hub
A network hub is a node that broadcasts data to every computer or Ethernet-based device connected to it.LAN
Router
A router inspects a given data packet’s destination Internet Protocol address (IP address), calculates the best way for it to reach its destination and then forwards it accordingly.BRIEF: It connects networks together.
NIC
is a hardware component, typically a circuit board or chip, which is installed on a computer so it can connect to a network.
Star network , A and DA
A- Fast performane and easy to expand using nodes and failure in a minor cable will only affect one node.
DA- Uses th emost cable which make is expensive and an extra hub / switch which is required to buy for this network , increases the cost.
Bus network , A and DA
A- Simple and cheap as it requires less cable length and it’s easy to extend .
DA-If the man cable fails the whole network will fai
l.
Wan PROS
Wide distance range
Can be used if 1 system fails
Lan PROS
Cheap , internet can be shared with every device connected
Sharing/accessing files is easier
Wan CONS
Expensive
Sharing and accessing files takes time
Every device relies on it’s own internet connection
Lan CONS
Limited range
Easy to get hacked and for a virus to spread
If the main server is not set up correctly all devices will suffer
Network Topologies
They are simple diagrams that layout the network
