Networks Flashcards
What is a computer network
A computer network is a group of computers connected together to share resources and communicate using standard protocols..
Wired/cabled networks
Uses ethernet cables, or fibre optic cables to transfer data
Wireless networks
Often just known as Wi-Fi
Node
Any system or device connected to a network
Advantages of networks (in a business)
Fast efficient communication
Sharing of resources
Centralization of data
Flexible access
Leisure(not included in a business)
Increased control and security
Disadvantages of a network(in a business environment)
Confidential data is vulnerable, if not properly secured
Expensive to set up and maintain certain types of networks
Harmful software can spread quickly via a network
Comparison between wireless and wired networks
Freedom of movement for users:
Wireless Network: Users can access the network from anywhere within range.
Wired Network: Users need to be connected by a cable to a port.
Sharing Files:
Wireless Network: Easier because no cables are needed, but may be slower.
Wired Network: Generally faster but requires cables.
Cables:
Wireless Network: No cables needed, making it less cluttered.
Wired Network: Requires many cables and ports, which can be messy and cumbersome.
Network used in small areas such as home or small office environments
Personal area network (PAN)
Home area network (HAN)
Network used in bigger offices and in schools
Local Area Network (LAN)
Wireless local area network (WLAN)
Network that connects more than one LAN in different places
Wide Area Network (WAN)
Largest network in the world
Global Area Network (the internet)
PAN definition
Is a network organised around an individual or a couple of individuals, typically within a range of 10 metres
Advantages of PAN network
No extra wires needed with Bluetooth, so no cable clutter or space issues. PAN is affordable.
Within a 10-meter range, PAN networks are reliable and stable.
Connect multiple devices to one device simultaneously.
Disadvantages of PAN
Limited range—only a few meters.
Slow data transmission due to Bluetooth and infrared.
Wireless PAN networks emit harmful rays, potentially causing health issues like brain damage and heart problems.
What is a Bluetooth connection
Bluetooth is a type of short-range wireless technology that replaces cables between devices.
