Main themes in NVLMG
Darkness – Sense of confusion and uncertainty – even lights make the image of Hailsham so that ‘you can hardly make it out at all’ page 244
Memory – questioned in its ability to create the truth or create a version of it ‘he wanted was not just to hear about Hailsham, but remember Hailsham’ ‘getting the urge to order all these old memories’
Separation – Clones have one another – they are separate but come together until death with their limited time to make connections, they cherish them

Time: Truncated clone lives, precious fragile resource
NVLMG introduction
Inspired by science fiction as new realism, 21st century writer Ishiguro offers ‘NVLMG’ as a social commentary on the advances of biotechnology and rural england in the 1980s and 990s as his clone protagonists exist within a referential setting. With key elements of technology and dystopia, Ishiguro is able to construct his novel in a way that amplifies the use of the theme of ‘….’
