A

Developmental aid is where a country is given money for long-term support and it is aimed at improving the quality of life and development of the country.

A

Many people in Nigeria don’t have access to basic necessities such as safe water, sanitation and a reliable electricity supply. Also around 60% of Nigeria’s population live on less than $1 a day.

A

Most aid comes from the UK and the USA as well as the World Bank.

A

In 2014, Nigeria received $500 million to fund development projects. Aid from the USA helps to protect people against the spread of AIDS/HIV. The Community Care provides support for orphans.

A

1 in 8 Nigerian children die before the age of 5 so Christian Aid helped target life-threatening diseases among young children, and 360,000 children under 5 received life saving treatment.

Waste disposal is a major issue. Traffic congestion leads to high levels of air pollution. The development of Abuja has resulted in areas of rich natural vegetation being replaced by concrete

Tin mining can lead to soil erosion and local water supplies being polluted with toxic chemicals. Oil spills can cause fires, send CO2 and other harmful gases into the atmosphere which form acid rain.

A

Nigeria’s HDI has been increasing steadily since 2005 and is expected to continue to rise. Most indicators suggest that economic development since 1990 has improved the quality of people’s lives.
