Non-Experimental Methods Flashcards
Why do we use Non-Experimental Methods?
As some believe that experimental methods are too controlled and not applicable to the real world
What are the 5 types of Non-Experimental Methods?
-Self Report
-Observational Studies
-Correlation Studies
-Case Studies
-Content Analysis
What is Self-Report?
Where pps report on their own thoughts or behaviours using specific methods e.g interviews or questionnaires
What is Observational Studies?
Where pps behaviour is recorded through watching
What are Correlation Studies?
Where two naturally occurring variables are measured to establish a relationship
What are Case Studies?
Where 1 person, group or organisation is studied in detail
What is Content Analysis?
Where secondary material is analysed in order to get insights into human thoughts or behaviour
What types of questions are used in self-report?
Structure and Multiple Choice
What are open questions?
Require written responses in which pps are free to answer how they wish
What is an advantage of open questions?
good for exploring in depth
What are closed questions?
Limited answer options often with fixed set of responses
What are 2 advantages of closed questions?
-can compare answers and identify patterns
-helps to stay focused on aim of investigation
Are open or closed questions used in self-reporting?
Can be a mix of both
What are questionnaires?
a list of pre-set questions often presented in written form in which pps respond
What are 2 advantages of questionares?
-time and cost effective
-can be made anonymous
