The (answer) occurs with verbs of telling, giving and showing. The person to whom the giving, showing or telling is done is put in the dative case.
Dative of indirect object

Dative with certain adjectives

when the original verb is transitive the compounded form governs the accusative too.

A personal pronoun in the dative case not closely connected with the rest of the sentence, that does not depend on any one word.
