Nucleic Acids & DNA Replication Flashcards
What is the function of DNA?
Holds the genetic information that codes for proteins
What is the function of RNA?
Transfers genetic information from DNA to ribosomes
What are ribosomes made up of?
rRNA and protein
What is the general structure of a nucleotide?
Phosphate group - pentose sugar - nitrogen containing base
What is the structure of DNA?
Phosphate group - deoxyribose sugar - nitrogen containing base
What is the structure of RNA?
Phosphate group - ribose sugar - nitrogen containing base
What are the base pairs of DNA?
Adenine —> Thymine
Guanine —> Cytosine
What are the base pairs of RNA?
Adenine —> Uracil
Guanine —> Cytosine
How are polynucleotides formed?
Nucleotides are joined together by a condensation reaction which forms a phosphodiester bond between the phosphate group of one nucleotide and the pentose sugar of another
What backbone does DNA have?
Sugar-phosphate
Why is the sugar-phosphate backbone strong and stable?
Covalent phosphodiester bonds
How many polynucleotide strands is DNA made from and what does this form?
2 polynucleotide strands making a double helix
What does anti-parallel mean?
The 2 strands of DNA run in opposite directions
What is step 1 in DNA replication?
DNA helicase breaks hydrogen bonds between complementary bases in the polynucleotide strands
This causes the 2 strands to separate and the DNA helix to unwind
What is step 2 of DNA replication?
New DNA nucleotides are attracted to the exposed bases on the template strands
Hydrogen bonds form between the complementary base pairings
