Nucleotides Flashcards
What are nucleic acids?
-large molecules contained in the nucleus
What are the 2 nucleic acids?
-DNA + RNA
-polymers made of many monomers
What are the 3 structures in a nucleotide?
-phosphate group
-nitrogen containing organic base
-pentose sugar
RNA sugar
-ribose
-polymers of nucleotides
DNA sugar
-deoxyribose
What are the organic bases?
-adenine
-cytosine
-guanine
-uracil
How do nucleotides join together?
-phosphodiester bonds
-formed in condensation reactions
DNA nucleotide structure
-double helix
-has 2 deoxyribose sugar
-2 polynucleotides joined together by H bonds
-between complementary bases
-H at 2’
RNA nucleotide structure
-single polynucleotide chain
-has ribose with OH group at 2’
-presence of OH = more susceptible to hydrolysis
What are phosphodiester bonds?
-separate nucleotides jointed via condensation reactions
-occur between phosphate group of 1 nucleotide and pentose sugar of the next
-chain of alternating bonds = backbone
