What is nutrition?
Nutrition is what you eat - and what you eat is really important for your health.
What is a balanced diet?
A balanced diet means that you are getting the correct amount of all the food groups, and not too much or too little of any food group (including fibre and water as well).
What are carbohydrates used as?
They are used as fuel for your body - active or growing humans need lots of carbohydrates.
What is an example of carbohydrates?
Starch ==> bread/potatoes/cereals ==> Energy
What are proteins used for?
They are vital for growth and to repair damaged areas.
What is an example of proteins?
Proteins ==> meat/eggs/fish ==> building cells
What are lipids (fats and oils) used for?
They act as an energy store which your body uses if your body runs out of carbohydrates.
What is an example of lipids?
Fat ==> butter/cooking oil/cream ==> energy
What vitamins used for?
They are only needed in small amounts - they keep many vital processes happening.
What is an example of vitamins?
A, B1, B2, C, D, E ==> vegetables, fruit, cereals
What are minerals used for?
Building strong bones and teeth, and turning the food you eat into energy.
What is an example of minerals?
Iron, Calcium, Sodium ==> meat, milk, salt ==> blood, nerves, teeth, bones
What is fibre used for?
It helps food move through your digestive system.
What is an example of fibre?
Fibre ==> vegetables, fruit, cereals
What is water used for?
About 75% of your body is water and all chemical reactions occur in water
