Nutrition in Humans Flashcards
What is Nutrition?
Nutrition is The process by which organisms obtain food and energy for growth, repair and maintenance of the Body
Nutrition process
Feeding or ingestion
Digestion
Absorption
Assimilation
Feeding
Food is taken into the Body
Digestion
Large food molecules are broken down into smaller, soluble molecules that can be absorbed into the Body cells
Absorption
Digested Food substances Are absorbed into body cells
Assimilation
Some of the absorbed food substances are converted into new protoplasm or used to provide energy
Gut Size
9 metres
Parts of Gut
Mouth Buccal Cavity Pharynx Oesophagus The stomach Small intestine Large intestine Anus
Peristalsis
Rhythmic wave-like contractions of the walls of the gut. It is caused by the alternate contradictions of the circular and longitudinal muscles in the Walla. It helps to push the food along the gut
Organs which are not part of the gut but they are involved in nutrition
Liver
Gall bladder
Pancreas
Teeth
Chewing action of the teeth breaks down large pieces of food into smaller pieces. This increases the surface area of the food so enzymes can act on it efficiently
Salivary glands
These secrete saliva into the mouth. Saliva flows into the buffalo cavity via tubes called Salivary ducts
Tongue
The tongue helps to mix the food with Saliva. Taste buds on The tongue help you to identify and select suitable foods
Pharynx
Part of the gut which connects the buffalo cavity to the oesophagus and the Larynx(voice-box)
Also leads to trachea
Both Air and food must pass through Pharynx
Air = Trachea Food= oesophagus
