Q

Peristalsis

A

Rhythmic wave-like contractions of the walls of the gut. It is caused by the alternate contradictions of the circular and longitudinal muscles in the Walla. It helps to push the food along the gut

Q

Teeth

A

Chewing action of the teeth breaks down large pieces of food into smaller pieces. This increases the surface area of the food so enzymes can act on it efficiently

A

These secrete saliva into the mouth. Saliva flows into the buffalo cavity via tubes called Salivary ducts

Part of the gut which connects the buffalo cavity to the oesophagus and the Larynx(voice-box)
Also leads to trachea

16
Q

Epiglottis

A

A piece of flap-like tissue that prevents food from going down the wrong way

17
Q

Diaphragm

A

A sheet of muscle which separates the thorax from the abdomen.

18
Q

Two layers of Muscle

A

Longitudinal muscles = outer side of Gut wall

Circular muscles = Inner side of the Gut wall

19
Q

Circular Muscles

A

Constrict the lumen
When circular muscles contract, longitudinal contract

Gut becomes narrow and long
Food is squeezed
