Milgrams shock study (1963) - procedure

A
  • volunteer sample of 40 men (study on ‘learning and punishment’)
  • real ppts paired with confederates
  • told to teach learner (confederates) word pairs
  • if the learner got an answer wrong the ppt had to administer an electric shock of increasing voltage
  • experimenter provided a verbal prompt

  • 65% administered full 450 volts
  • nearly all will obey an unjust order
