A
Both asexual and sexual
4
Q
Reproduction, Asexual?
A
- Either by zoospores or fragmentation (as seen in spirogyra)
- ZS are produced in cells at the tip of the filaments and these have about 120 flagella
- after escaping the leave the cell and shed their flagella then divide via mitosis and form new filaments
5
Q
Reproduction, Sexual?
A
- Antheridia are formed and these are short and box like and represent the male sex organ
- Sperm looks like ZS but are smaller
- Oogonia are formed and these are swollen and round and are the female sex organ
- Egg grows, pore develops on side of oogonium, sperm that has escaped the antheridia is attracted
- One sperm enters the oogonium and unites with the egg = zygote
- Cell wall thickens, dormancy, good conditions, meiosis = 4 haploid ZS = new filament each
- This is oogamy = large and non-motile egg + small and motile sperm
