Oils Flashcards
What is cracking?
Cracking is the splitting up of long chains of hydrocarbons into ones with much higher demand like from diesel to petrol.
Under what conditions is cracking done?
When the long chain of hydrocarbons is vaporized, the vapor is passed over a powdered catalyst at high temperatures. The long chains split or crack on the surface of the specks of the catalyst.
What is the formula for alkenes?
CnH2n
What is special about all alkenes?
They have a double bond, described as unsaturated as they could make even more bonds.
How can ethanol be produced from ethene?
This can happen by the use of steam which hydrates it.
How can renewable sources be use to produce ethanol?
The fermentation of sugar which produces both ethanol and carbon dioxide. The ethanol isn’t concentrated and needs to be purified before usage.
What are polymers?
Long chains of hydrocarbons.
How are they made?
Under high pressure in the presence of a catalyst.
What happens when you increase the temperature of the polymerisation?
It becomes more flexible and has a lower density.
