Optics Flashcards
UGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Light is a form of [1] that travels in the form of [2]
- Energy
- Electromagnetic Waves
Define electromagnetic specture.
The entire range of light that exists
Light is measured in [1] length or [2]
- Wave
- Frequency
What is wave length? What unit of measurment is used?
Wave length is the distance between two succesive wave crests. It is measured in nanometres.
What is frequency? What unit of measurement is used?
Frequency is the number of waves that pass through a given point per second. It is measured in hertz.
Name the electromagnetic spectrum, weakest to stronkest.
Radio Waves (wtf who still uses radios), Microwaves (ramen), Infared light (light but heat), UV rays (enemy of sunscreen), X-Ray (broken wrist), Gamma Rays (3rd letter of the alphabet in greece)
What is color blindness?
Color blindness occurs when there is a problem with the pigments in certain nerve cells of the eye that sense color called cones (ice cream).
Where are cone cells found?
Cone cells are found in the light sensitive layer of tissue at the back of your eye known as your retina.
What is incandescent light?
Incandescent light is produced by an object at very high temperatures (think how you see your crush hehe).
What is fluorescent light?
Produced when ultraviolet radiation is applied to substances (uv rays react with stuf and light go brrr)
What is chemiluminesence?
Light produced by chemical reactions. Typically very little heat, referred to as cool light. (Chemistry + Magic = Light)
What is phosphorecent light?
Excited atoms store their energy. Glow in the dark objects.
What is bioluminesence?
Light produced by plants and animals. Form of chemiluminesence
What is triboluminesence?
Light produced from the friction of crystals (if you take two quartz crystals and rub them together, it will produce light).
What is electric discharge?
Light produced by electrical currents that pass through air and gas (lights passing through neon gas)
