Q

Describe the combustion of hydrocarbons?

A

Exothermic reaction occurs when hydrocarbons react with oxygen.
Complete combustion produces carbon dioxide and water.
Incomplete combustion produces carbon or carbon monoxide and water.

7
Q

Describe the physical properties of alkanes?

A

The first few in the series are gases then liquids then solids.
Boiling points and viscosity increase as molecules get bigger.
Volatility and flammability decrease as molecules get bigger.
Poor reactivity.

Q

Process of fractional distillation?

A

Crude oil is heated and vaporised.
Vapor rises up from the bottom of the fractionating column.
The bottom is hotter at the bottom and cooler at the top.
Hydrocarbons cool as they go up the column.
They condense at different heights since they have different boiling points.

16
Q

Catalytic cracking?

A

Reactant heated into vapor and is passed over a hot catalyst.

17
Q

How are the products of cracking used?

A

The products are alkanes or alkenes - used as polymers.

18
Q

What is an alkene?

A

An unsaturated hydrocarbon. Contains a C=C bond.
CnH2n

19
Q

Test for alkenes?

A

Bromine water.
If it turns from orange to colourless it is an alkene.

20
Q

Describe the combustion of alkenes?

A

They burn with smoky flames due to incomplete combustion.

21
Q

What is alcohol?

A

An organic compound containing an OH- functional group.

22
Q

Uses of alcohol?

A

Fuels
Solvents
Drinks

23
Q

What is a polymer?

A

Long chain molecule made up of lots of smaller molecules joined together.
