Organic Chemistry 2 Flashcards
What is the empirical formula?
The simplest whole number ration of each number in a compound e.g CH2 is the empirical formula for C4H8
What is molecular formula?
Molecular formula is the actual whole number ratio of each atom in a compound
What is structural formula?
The graphical representation of each atom in a molecule of a compound e.g CH3CH2CH3, Propane
What is displayed formula?
This shows the bonds in a molecule
What is general formula?
A formula that shows the composition of any member of an entire class of compounds e.g CnH2n+2
What is a functional group?
A group of atoms that are responsible for the reactions of particular compounds e.g C2H5OH (the OH makes this compound an alcohol)
What is a isomer?
Compounds that have the same molecular formula but have different displayed formulas.
What is a saturated hydrocarbon?
A saturated hydrocarbon contains single bonds between carbon the atoms
What is a unsaturated hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon that contains a double bond between its carbon atoms
What is viscosity?
How difficult it is for a liquid to flow
What is volatility?
How easy it is for a substance to turn into a gas
What is a fraction?
A group of hydrocarbons extracted from crude oil that have very similar boiling points
What is boiling point?
The point at which a substance changes from a liquid to gas
What is a homologous series?
A group of elements that have similar chemical properties, same general formula, same functional group and have a trend in physical properties
What is the general formula for Alkenes?
CnH2n
