Organic Tests Flashcards
Alkene test?
Add bromine water dropwise
Alkene test - if a C=C is present?
The bromine water will decolourise rapidly from orange to colourless
Haloalkane test?
Add aqueous silver nitrate and ethanol, then warm to 50C
Haloalkane test - if chloroalkane present?
White precipitate formed. Dissolves on addition of dilute ammonia
Haloalkane test - if bromoalkane is present?
Cream precipitate formed. Dissolves on addition of concentrated ammonia
Haloalkane test - if iodoalkane is present?
Yellow precipitate formed. Insoluble on addition of both dilute and concentrated ammonia
Test for carbonyls?
Add 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine
Carbonyl test - if C=O is present?
Yellow/orange precipitate formed
What does 2,4-DNPH stand for?
2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine
Test for aldehydes?
Add Tollens’ reagent and warm
Aldehyde test - if an aldehyde is present?
A silver mirror forms
Tollens’ reagent’s chemical name?
Ammoniacal silver nitrate ( [Ag(NH3)2]+ )
Test for alcohols?
Add acidified potassium dichromate and warm it in a water bath
Alcohol test - if a primary alcohol is present?
Colour change from orange solution to green solution
Alcohol test - if a secondary alcohol is present?
Colour change from orange solution to green solution
