Organisation Flashcards
What are the basic building blocks for all living things?
cells
name for a group of cells with similar structure and function
a tissue
name for a group of tissues performing specific functions
organs
name of collection of organs organised into a specific system
organ system
what does a digestive system do?
digest and absorb food
what do enzymes do?
speed up reactions in organisms
what do digestive enzymes do?
covert food into small soluble molecules (so it can be absorbed into bloodstream)
what does Carbohydrase do? (its and enzyme)
breaks down carbohydrates into simple sugars
what does protease do? (it’s an enzyme)
break down proteins into amino acids
what does lipase do? (its and enzyme)
breaks down lipids (fats) into glycerol and fatty acids
what are the products of digestions used for?
to build new carbohydrates, lipids and proteins
where is bile made and stored in the body?
made=liver
stored=gall bladder
why is bile alkaline?
to neutralise hydrochloric acid from the stomach
what does bile do?
mixes fat with water to form small droplets which increases the surface area
how does a larger surface area and alkaline conditions help the lipase enzyme?
alkaline conditions and large surface area increase rate of fat broken down
