Organs, Tissues Etc Flashcards

1
Q

What is equilibrium?

A

An equal and balanced amount of something

Eg when all of the particles are diffused equally around a room or in water

Q

What does an increase in temperature mean for diffusion?

A

An increase in temperature means the particles in a gas or liquid move more quickly because they gain more kinetic energy and vibrate. Diffusion takes place more rapidly as the random movement of the particles speeds up as they vibrate with more energy.

Q

How does a greater difference in concentration effect the rate of diffusion?

A

The greater difference in concentration, the faster the rate of diffusion. Many particles will move randomly towards the area of low concentration. This difference between test areas of concentration is called the concentration gradient. Diffusion occurs down a concentration gradient.

Q

Grow are the lungs adapted for gad exchange?

A

The walls are only one cell thick so gases do not have far to diffuse
The lining is moist so oxygen dissolves quickly
The alveoli covers a large surface area which allows gas exchange to occur.

Q

How is the small intestine adapted for diffusion?

A

Thin
Large surface area for absorption
Villi contain blood capillaries which help carry absorbed food molecules.

9
Q

How is a leaf adapted for diffusion?

A

The concentration is lower in the leaf so the carbon dioxide is diffused into cell, and the opposite happens for oxygen.
They have a large spongy surface area.
Guard cell with stomata opens and closes.

Q

What is a tissue?

A

A tissue is a group of cells with similar structure and function working together. They are a group of cells all the same type doing the same job.

16
Q

What does muscular tissue do?

A

Can contract to bring about movement.

17
Q

What does glandular tissue do?

A

Contains secretory cells that can produce substances such as enzymes and hormones.

18
Q

What does epithelial tissue do?

A

Covers the outside and internal organs of the body.

19
Q

What do the xylem and phloem do in a plant?

A

Transport water and dissolved mineral ions around the plant from the roots.

20
Q

What does epidermal tissue do in a plant?

A

Covers and protects surface.

21
Q

What does mesophyll tissue do in a plant?

A

Contains chloroplasts and carries out photosynthesis.

22
Q

What are organs?

A

They are made up of tissues. One organ can contain several tissues all working together.

23
Q

What tissues are present in the stomach and what do they do?

A

Muscular tissue, to churn food and digestive juices together
Glandular tissue, to produce digestive juices and break down food
Epithelial tissue, to cover the inside and outside of the organ

24
Q

What does the pancreas do?

A

Makes hormones to control our blood sugar

Makes some enzymes to digest food

25
Q

What is the function of the nervous system?

A

Receives incoming information via impulses. Sends messages about how to react.

26
Q

What is the function of e skeletal system?

A

Provides shape and structure to the body. Allow movement and protects vital organs. Produces blood cells.

27
Q

What is the function of the integumentary system?

A

Protects the body from invaders by providing a tough protective layer. Warms and cools the body.

28
Q

What is the function of the Muscular system?

A

Allows movement in the body. Keeps head in position. Provides heat.

29
Q

What is the function of the endocrine system?

A

Controls bodily systems by using chemical messengers called hormones.
