Osmosis Flashcards

Q

What is tissue fluid

A

It’s water with oxygen, glucose and stuff dissolves in it which surrounds the cells in the body. It’s squeezed out of the blood capillaries to supply the cells with everything they need. The tissue fluid will usually have a different water concentration to the fluid inside a cell so water will either move into or out of the cell by osmosis

Q

If the water concentration in the tissue fluid is higher than in the cell fluid what is the tissue fluid called and how will the water move?

Q

Osmosis in plants

A

When a plant is well watered its cells drew water in by osmosis and become swollen and turgid. The contents of the cell push against the in elastic cell wall. This is called turgor pressure and it helps to support the plant tissues. If a plant doesn’t get enough water it’s cells lose their turgor pressure and they become flaccid so the plant will start to wilt.

Q

What happens if a plant doesn’t get enough water?

A

If the plants really short of water the cytoplasm inside its cells start to shrink and he membrane pulls away from the cell wall. This is called plasmolysis and the cell is said to be plasmolysed. The plant doesn’t totally lose it’s shape though, because the inelastic cell wall keeps things in position.

Q

What is osmosis?

A

Osmosis is the movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration
