Osmosis Flashcards
Define osmosis
The net movement of water particles from an area of higher water potential to an area of lower water potential through a partially permeable membrane
What is a dilute concentration ?
Higher concentration of water molecules
Lower concentration of solute molecules
What is a concentrated solution ?
Higher concentration if solute molecules
Lower concentration of water molecules
What is water potential ?
The pressure exerted by water molecules as they collide is it a membrane or surface
Unit of water potential
Pa or kPa
What is an hypertonic solution?
Hyper - sugar rush - more sugar particles
Higher concentration of solute particles
Lower concentration of water particles
What is an isotonic solution?
the concentration of solutes outside the cell is equal to the concentration of solutes inside the cell
Equal Same
What is a hypotonic solution?
Lower concentration of solute particles
Higher concentration of water
What is the osmotic movement in an isotonic solution ?
No net movement of water as rate of water moving in is the same as rate of water moving out
What is the osmotic movement in a hypotonic solution?
Water moves into cell by osmosis
What is the osmotic movement in a hypertonic solution?
Water will leave the cell and into the solution/cell
Describe an animal cell in a hyper tonic solution?
Shrivelled or undergone cremation as rate of water moving out is greater than water moving in
Describe a plant cell in a hypertonic solution
Plasmolysed as Cell cytoplasm is pulled away from the wall.
Describe an animal cell in isotonic solution
Cells normal appearance . No net movement of water molecules by osmosis
Describe a plant cell in an isotonic solution
Flacid
Cytoplasms just touches the wall
