osmosis and diffusion Flashcards

1
Q

what is diffusion?

A

diffusion: smalldissolvedsubstances move from higher concentration area to lowerconcentration until they are equally disturbed

Q

how does diffusion work?

A

a) higher concentration of substances on one side of cell membrane
b) substances move from higher to lower concentration area until equilibrium (balanced state) is reached
c) when equilibrium is reached, substances diffuse across the cell membrane in both directions`

Q

what is osmosis?

A

osmosis: water molecules move from high water concentration area to low water concentration area (or water moves from low solute area to high solute area)

Q

what are the three possible situations resulting from osmosis?

A

hypotonic - there is more water outside the cell than inside the cell, which can cause the cell to burst open.

isotonic - there is an equal concentration of water, water moves in and out freely no exploding or shrinking

hypertonic - there is more water outside the cell than inside the cell, the water moves out of this cell causing it to shrink and appear wrinkled.
