A

Skeletal condition characterised by low bone mass, deterioration of bone tissue and disruption of bone architecture that leads to compromised bone strength

What are the risk factors for osteoporosis?

A

> 65 years, female, caucasian/south Asian, family history, history of low trauma fracture
Low body weight, premature menopause, calcium/vit D deficiency, inadequate physical activity, smoking

A

DEXA scan of lumbar spine and hip

What is the management for osteoporosis?

A

Weight bearing exercise, vit D3 supplement, limiting alcohol, smoking cessation
1st line - Oral bisphosphonate (alendronic acid)
2nd line - denosumab or teriparatide
