Q

What is a displacement reaction?

A
  • A displacement reaction is when a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal
  • Mg + CuSO -» MgSO + Cu

Q

How can you extract copper from an ore?

A
  • By using carbon
  • If you heat it with carbon the carbon will displace the copper as it is more reactive
  • you will then get the copper on its own
  • This applies to all metals less reactive than carbon

Q

How can we extract Aluminium from ore?

A
  • By using molten electrolysis
  • molten electrolysis is used because aluminium is not soluble in water
  • At the cathode Aluminium ions will gain electrons to form Aluminium atoms
  • At the anode oxide ions will lose electrons to become oxygen gas
  • The oxygen will react with the carbon anode and produce Carbon dioxide so the anodes must be frequently changed out
