P2 Forces In Action Flashcards
How does force affect the extension of a spring?
The more force added to the spring the further the spring extends. So force is proportional to extension.
Hooke’s law states that
The extension material is directly proportional to the force applied
Springs in series and parallel
…
Elastic deformation
Material will return to its original length when the stretching force is removed
Plastic deformation
The material remained distorted when the force is removed this will happen once any more force is added beyond the materials elastic limit
The principle of moments
When an object is in equilibrium (there is no result for the resultant moment) the sum of the anticlockwise moment equals the some of the clockwise moments
Mechanical advantage
MA = load / effort
MA = diameter of driven gear / diameter of driver gear
Pressure
The smaller the Surface area the higher the pressure
Pressure in liquids
In a liquid pressure increases with death because there is a great mass of the water above you this causes a great weight. A greater force causes greater pressure
Why do things float in terms of density
When something is less dense than water it will float and when something is more dense than water it sinks
Why do things float in terms of forces
The resultant force is upwards to float and if the resultant force downwards it will sink
Archimedes principle
the upThrust exerted on a body immersed in fluid weather fully or partially submerged is equal to the weight of the fluid that the body displaces
