Pain Flashcards
Neuropathic pain
pain arising as a direct consequence of a lesion or disease affecting the somatosensory system
Neuropathic pain - Paresthesia
PAINLESS, abnormal sensation
Neuropathic pain - Dysesthesia
- UNPLESANT sensation
- burning or shooting pain
Neuropathic pain - Allodynia
pain is felt with a stimulus that normally wouldn’t cause pain
Neuropathic pain - Hyperalgesia
pain is felt with a stimulus that would elicit a low amount of pain
Nociceptive pain
- caused by an injury that stimulates pain receptors
- FUNCTIONAL - response to an injury or possible injury
Pain matrix dysfunction
- top-down regulation of pain is distributed when this matrix malfunctions
- reduced antinociception and/or decreased pronociception increase pain
What are the 4 types of pain matrix dysfunctions?
- fibromyalgia
- episodic tension-type headache
- migraine
- chronic whiplash
Complex regional pain syndrome
- involves the somatosensory, autonomic, and motor systems
- allodynia and hyperalgesia can develop
Compartment syndrome
pressures within the muscle builds up to painful levels and decreases blood flow
Chronic low back pain
abnormal pain processing which the neurons are pathologically active
Examples of Neuropathic Pain (2)
- nerve entrapment and compression
- phantom limb pain
Examples of Neuropathic Pain: Central Pain (3)
- MS
- SCI
- stroke
Examples of Neuropathic Pain: Small Fiber Neuropathy (3)
- diabetic neuropathy
- Guillain-Barre syndrome
- post-herpetic pain
