Paper 2, Topic 5 - Forces Flashcards
What is a scalar quantity?
A quantity with only magnitude, not direction
What is a vector quantity?
A quantity with both direction and magnitude
How can a vector quantity be drawn and what does it show?
An arrow, length represents magnitude, shows force’s direction
What is a force?
A push or pull acting on an object due to interaction with another object
Give 4 examples of contact forces
Friction, tension, air resistance, normal reaction
Give 3 examples of non-contact forces
Gravitational, electrostatic, magnetic
Give 3 examples of vector quantities
Velocity, displacement, force
Give 3 examples of scalar quantities
Speed, distance, time
What is weight?
Force that acts due to gravity and the object’s mass, measured in Newtons (N)
Give the formula for weight
W=mg
What is an object’s centre of mass?
The single point where an object’s weight can be considered to act through
What piece of equipment can measure an object’s weight?
Newton-meter
What does it mean for an object to do work?
Force causes an object to be displaced through a distance
What is the equation for work done?
W=Fs
What happens when work is done against frictional forces?
Rise in temperature, kinetic energy converted to thermal
