The liberals tried to address this problem by introducing the old age pensions act of 1908. This was to help the poor elderly by giving them an income without having to contribute to it.

Most people thought that pension payments for the elderly were a good idea. Pension provided elderly over the age of 70 between 1s (5p) and 5s (25p) a week if annual income was less than £21. Married couples were given 7s 6p (37p).

Peter Clark argues that the Pensions Act was successful in its popularity with those it helped and by taking away the stigma of receiving help under the Poor Law.

introduction of pensions meant that older people no longer had to “work until they dropped” and they could enjoy a nice retirement after working a long life.
