What is a parable?
An earthly story with a heavenly meaning.
Why were parables effective for getting a message across?
The focused on the key message without too much clutter.
They captured and grabbed attention.
They were easy to understand and remember.
Clear beginning, middle and end.
Prodigal Son
A man had two sons. The youngest one asked for his inheritance, moved away and wasted all his money on having a good time.
Famine spread through the land and the only job he could get was feeding pigs.
Decided to return home and ask for forgiveness.
Father was overjoyed and decided to throw a great feast for him. The older brother was furious.
The father said that it was as if the younger brother was dead. He was lost but now is found.
Message of the Prodigal Son
The father forgives the son when he returns and welcomes him home.
In the same way, God waits for us to realise what we have done wrong and ask for forgiveness and welcomes us back when we do.
Parable of the Good Samaritian
Man is travelling from Jerusalem to Jericho. He is attacked and beaten by robbers and left to die.
Both a priest and a Levite walked past him and did not help.
A samaritian stopped, tended to his wounds, brought him to an inn and paid for his care.
Message of the Good Samaritian
Love your neighbour as you love yourself
You should be kind to everyone and count everyone as your neighbour, even if they have a different background or believe in different things.
Jesus’ teaching on prayer
Pray in private and God will reward you, rather than trying to draw attenton to yourself.
Do not use meaningless words in prayer.
Pray the Our Father asking for God’s forgiveness.
