part b Flashcards
are numerical description measures which indicate or locate the center of a distribution.
Measures of central tendency
In layman’s term, a measure of central tendency is an
average
What are the three commonly used measures of central
tendency?
MEAN / MEDIAN / MODE
sum of all the measurements divided by the number of measurements in the set.
mean
most popular and widely used.
It is sometimes called the arithmetic mean.
mean
Characteristics of the Mean
- The mean is the most appropriate measure of central
tendency when the data are in the interval or ratio. - The mean lies between the largest and smallest values or measurements.
- There is only one value for the mean for a given set of values or measurements.
- The mean is easily influenced by extreme values because all values contribute to the average.
the middle value of a given set of measurements,
provided that the values or measurements are arranged in an array.
median
an arrangement of values in increasing or decreasing order.
array
What are the characteristics of the median?
- The median is the most appropriate measure of central tendency for interval data.
- The median lies between the highest and lowest measurements.
- There is only one value for the median in a given set of measurements.
- The median is not influenced by extreme values
- The median is used when the middle value is desired. It is the value where 50% or half of the distribution lies above it and 50% lies below it.
the value which occurs most frequently in as set of
measurements or values.
mode
It is the least common among the three measures of central tendency.
mode
it is very useful as a measure of popularity.
mode
a distribution with only one mode
a distribution with two values for the mode
a distribution with three values for the mode
if there are more than three values for the mode
unimodal
bimodal
trimodal
