Action to avoid collision:
-Any alteration of course (if the circumstances allow), be large enough to be readily apparent to other vessels. Small alterations should be avoided.
- If there is sufficient sea room, alteration of course along may be the most effective form of collision avoidance provided it is carried out in good time and doesn’t result in another close quarter situation.
- Action taken to avoid collision with another vessel shall be such as to result in passing at a safe distance.
- The effectiveness of the action shall be carefully checked until the other vessel is finallypast and clear.
- If necessary to avoid collision or allow more time to assess the situation, a vessel shall slacken her speed or take all way off by stopping or reversing her means of propulsion.

- A v/l shall not cross a narrow channel or fairway if it impedes the passage of a vessel which can safely navigate within the channel or fairway.
- Overtaking can take place however the vessel to be overtaken has to take action to permit safe passing and the overtaking vessel must state her intentions with the appropriate sound signal (rule 34).
- A v/l nearing a bend or and area where sight is obscured by and obstruction the vessel shall sound ‘T’ (rule 34 e)

- This rule does not relive any v/l of her obligation under any other rule.
- V/l using the TSS shall:
• Proceed in the appropriate lane and in the general flow.
• Normally enter and leave the TSS at its termination points however when entering from the sides it shall be done at the smallest angle practicable to the direction of traffic flow.
- A v/l shall avoid crossing lanes as far as practicable however if obliged to do so it shall cross on a heading perpendicular to the general direction of traffic flow.
- A v/l shall not use and inshore traffic zone when she can safely navigate a TSS however, if < 20m, sailing or fishing v/l may use inshore traffic zone.
- A v/l apart from a crossing v/l or one which is joining/leaving a lane shall not normally enter a separation line except:
• In case of emergency to avoid immediate danger.
• To engage in fishing within a separation zone.
- A v/l <20 m or a sailing v/l shall not impede the passage of a power-driven vessel following a TSS.
- A RAM v/l when engaged in ops for maintenance of safety of navigation or picking up of a submarine cable in a TSS is exempt from complying with this rule.
