Pathgenesis & lab findings Flashcards
How do Ricksettia inner the body?
enter skin through arthropod bites
Coxiella- causes pneumonia contracted by inhalation
What does ricksettia do to endothelial cells?
hyper[plasia (hemmothage edema, vascular collapse, sepsis)
thrombi
ricksettial endotoxin causes this
What is the life cycle of rickssettia?
found only as a reticulate body
escapes phagosome lysis cell, invades another cell and multiply
What causes Rocky mountain spotted fever?
Rickettsia rickettsii- highest incidence of rickettsia in he US
most prevalent in summer where there is a high tick population
What are the reservoir and vector of Rickettsia rickettsii?
vector- dermacentor tick
reservoir - dermacentor ticks and rodents
maintained in transovarian route in all life stages
What are characteristics of rocky mountain spotted fever?
headaches an fever initially then
rash on palms and sole of feet then will go to trunk
What diseases does Coxiella brunetti cause?
Q fever-pnuemoia and hepatitis are symptoms
vaccine for some workers
What is the reservoir for Coxiella brunetti?
animal reservoir
spread to humans via infected animal tissues (especially placenta) and milk
who are risek for Coxiella infection?
people who work around animals and animal products
What is vector for coxiella brunetti?
only found in spot form
no vector
Rickettsia prowazekki causes what disease?
epidemic typhus
not found in US except for travelers and immigrants
What is the vector for rickettsia prowazekki?
louse vector (pediculus)- transferred via blouse GI infection human body
How is ricksettia prowazekii detected?
2 weeks after infection through IF
ELISA 1 week after for IgM
What are characteristics of epidemic typhus?
rashes appear in the trunk then hands and legs, do not appear in palms in or face
What is Brill-zinsser?
relapsing form of epidemic fever
no vector
recurrence of dormant ricksettia infection
antibody negative
