Periodic Table Flashcards
Groups
Vertical Columns which indicate the number of electrons in the valence shell
Periods
Horizontal rows which indicate how much shells the elements has
Group 1
Alkali Metals
Group VII
Halogens
Group VIII
Noble Gases
Where are transition metals found on the periodic table?
In the middle
What are the properties of transition metals
High Melting Point and high densities. They are metallic
How many electrons do noble gases have in their valance shell?
8
Why aren’t noble gases reactive
Because they have a complete valence shell
When an element in group seven takes part in a reaction, does the outer shell GIVE or TAKE electrons?
Gains
Why do halogens become less reactive as you go down the table?
The outer shells become further away from the nucleus and the force of attraction decreases. An outer electron is gained less easily
Hailides
Halogen atoms that are part of ionic compounds
How do hailers react?
Halogens higher up in the group will react with halides lower in the group to
displace them.
Why are halogens reactive?
They have 7 electrons in their outer shell
What is the equation for a metal reactions with water?
Reactive metal + water → metal hydroxide + hydrogen
