Why is the family unit important?

A

Behaviour- the family unit is where children first learn to interact with other people.

Companionship- a family unit helps people feel that they aren’t alone.

Care- families care for their members when they are sick, have a disability and in later life.

Protection- children depend on their families to protect them and provide for their needs. A family unit provides a safe environment for bringing children up.

Identity- most families teach their children their beliefs and pass on their religious, political and cultural traditions. This helps to shape people’s opinions, behaviour and identities.

Values- a positive family environment instils values such as tolerance, respect and charity. These are things all needed in a well ordered society.
