It is based on motive forces 
Based on frauds structure of personality:
-The Id (pleasure principle)
-The ego (reality)
-The superego (morality)

  • oral stage (id)
  • anal stage 3m-3y (ego)
  • phallic stage 3y-6-y (superego)

If the development of these phases were disrupted they build defense mechanisms
