Causes Proximal tubule acidosis -

1. less bicarb in serum, so more in urine = alkalinized urine and acidotic blood –> increased respirations to get rid of CO2 –> also causes more O2 to enter so used in mountain sickness
2. Also, less activity of Na+/H+ exchange in lumen so sodium is dumped and water follows = diuresis
