Venlafaxine
SNRI: inhibit 5-HT (serotonin) and NE reuptake
Antidepressant
Side effects: high BP, stimulant effects, sedation, nausea
Duloxetine
SNRI: inhibit 5-HT (serotonin) and NE reuptake
Antidepressant
Side effects: high BP, stimulant effects, sedation, nausea
*also used for diabetic peripheral neuropathy
Imipramine
TCA (Antidepressant): block reuptake of 5-HT and NE
Tertiary amine: SERT>NET
Side effects: sedation, hypotension, arrythmias; more anticholinergic effects (tachycardia, urinary retention, dry mouth) than 2ndary amines
Amitriptyline
TCA (Antidepressant): block reuptake of 5-HT and NE
Tertiary amine: SERT>NET
Side effects: sedation, hypotension, arrythmias; more anticholinergic effects (tachycardia, urinary retention, dry mouth) than 2ndary amines
Desipramine
TCA (Antidepressant): block reuptake of 5-HT and NE
Secondary amine: NET>SERT
Side effects: sedation, hypotension, arrythmias; fewer anticholinergic effects (tachycardia, urinary retention, dry mouth) than tertiary amines
Nortriptyline
TCA (Antidepressant): block reuptake of 5-HT and NE
Secondary amine: NET>SERT
Side effects: sedation, hypotension, arrythmias; fewer anticholinergic effects (tachycardia, urinary retention, dry mouth) than tertiary amines
-iptyline or -ipramine
TCA (Antidepressant): block reuptake of 5-HT and NE
Side effects: sedation, hypotension, arrythmias; anticholinergic effects (tachycardia, urinary retention, dry mouth)
Tranylcypromine
MAOI (antidepressant)
Mech: nonselective inhibition of MAO; increases levels of dopamine, serotonin, and NE
Risk: hypertensive crisis (interaction with tyramine from wine, cheese, fermented foods)
Contra: SSRIs, TCAs
Phenelzine
MAOI (antidepressant)
Mech: nonselective inhibition of MAO; increases levels of dopamine, serotonin, and NE
Risk: hypertensive crisis (interaction with tyramine from wine, cheese, fermented foods)
Contra: SSRIs, TCAs
Isocarboxazide
MAOI (antidepressant)
Mech: nonselective inhibition of MAO; increases levels of dopamine, serotonin, and NE
Risk: hypertensive crisis (interaction with tyramine from wine, cheese, fermented foods)
Contra: SSRIs, TCAs, bipolar (can induce mania)
Bupropion
