Pharmacology Flashcards
what is pharmacokinectics
what the body does to the drug- absorption, secretion, distribution and metabolism
what is pharmacodynamics
what the drug does to the body- biological effects and mechanism of action
define what a drug is
any single synthetic or natural substance of known structure that is used in the treatment, prevention or diagnosis of disease
how do drugs act
by binding to specific target molecules
list the six targets drugs can bind to
(regulatory proteins); enzymes carrier molecules (transporters and pumps) ion channels receptors RNA DNA
what is an agonist
a drug that binds to a receptor to produce a cellular response
what is an antagonist
a drug that blocks the action of the agonist by binding to the same receptor
what is a ligand
a molecule that binds to another molecule
define affinity
the strength of association between a ligand and receptor
define efficacy
the ability of an agonist to provoke a cellular response
define potency
measure of drug intensity- amount required to produce an effect of given intensity
define competitive inhibition
binding of agonist and antagonist occur at same orthosteric and thus are competitive and mutually exclusive
define non competitive inhibition
agonist binds at orthosteric site and antagonist binds at separate allosteric site and is thus non competitive
receptors are mostly what
protein macro molecules
what is EC50
the concentration or dose of an agonist that elicits a half maximal response
