Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI)
i. Used to be called National committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS)
ii. Establishes procedural guidelines for all areas of lab

iii. Made up of volunteer representative from lab profession, industry and government

College of American Pathologists (CAP)
i. Lab inspections and accreditation
ii. Provides Proficiency testing

The Joint Commission
i. Accrediting agency for hospitals and nursing homes
ii. Inspects every two (2) years
1. Deficiencies corrected in specified timeframe
iii. Enforce standards established by CLSI
iv. Works with CAP to provide lab accreditation
Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA)
i. Enacted by congress to regulate all labs
ii. Divides labs into three classes (lvl: 1,2,3)
iii. Includes specific guidelines for:
1. Quality control
2. Quality assurance
3. Record keeping
4. Personnel qualification
Laboratory director
i. Interprets results to diagnose disease
ii. Pathologist or bioanalyst

i. Day to day operations of lab
ii. Liaison between director and lab staff
Technical supervisors
i. Daily work schedules and staffing

i. Directs work of other lab staff

iii. 4 -year med tech program, 1-year internship, and board exam

iii. 2 -year training in medical lab program, certification from approved agency
