Avoidance

A

Avoid coming into contact with phobic stimulus. Someone with a fear of public toilets may have to limit the time they spend outside the home in relation to how long they can last without a toilet. Can interfere with work, social life, etc.

Panic

A

Panic in response to presence of phobic stimulus. Crying and running away, clinging, having tantrums.

Emotional Characteristics of Phobias

A

Anxiety. Phobias are classified as anxiety disorders. Means they involve emotional, general response of anxiety and fear when in presence of it. Unpleasant state of high arousal. Prevents sufferer from relaxing and makes it hard to be positive. Fear is immediate reaction when presence or think of phobic stimulus.

Emotional Responses are Unreasonable

A

The fear of something might be disproportionate to the actual danger of it. (unrelated to this card: when someone has a fear, anxiety levels would increase when they enter a place associated with that phobia)

Selective Attention to Phobic Stimulus

A

When sees the phobic stimulus, hard to look away. Keeping attention on something really dangerous is good as it gives us the best chance of reacting quickly to a threat but not so good when irrational fear. Hard to concentrate.

Irrational Fears

A

Social phobias people will want to believe that they should sound intelligent or shouldn’t blush. This kind of belief increases pressure on sufferer to perform well.
