Phospholipid Bilayer Flashcards
Fluid mosaic model
Consistent pattern; flexible. The head of the phospholipid is hydrophilic, while the tail is hydrophobic. Also the head is polar while the tail is nonpolar
Membrane proteins
Embedded in membrane and flow among the lipids
Transport proteins
Channels and pumps that move materials across the membrane
Carbohydrates
Chains that act like a chemical ID card so cells can identify one another
Diffusion. Passive transport
Movement of molecules from one area of high concentration to low concentration; spreading out.
Facilitated diffusion, also passive transport
Larger molecules pass through the cell membrane with the help of a protein
Osmosis, passive transport
Diffusion of water across a semi permeable membrane
Isotonic solution
Concentration of solutes is equal, water flows back-and-forth equally in cell size does not change
Hypertonic
Surrounding solution has a higher solute concentration than that inside of the cell. There’s less pure water outside of salsa water moves outward, cell shrivels
Hypotonic
Surrounding solution has lower solute concentration than inside of the cell, there is more pure water outside the cells the water moves inward. Cell swells or bursts
Active transport
When molecules move from low to high concentration, requires ATP energy, opposite of diffusion
