Photosynthesis and Respiration Flashcards
Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is a process used by plants and other organisms to convert light energy into chemical energy that, through cellular respiration, can later be released to fuel the organism’s metabolic activities.
Producer
an organism that produces its own food.
Monosaccharide
the basic compounds that serve as the building blocks of carbohydrates.
Polysaccharide
a carbohydrate that can be decomposed by hydrolysis into two or more molecules of monosaccharides.
Starch
an organic chemical that is produced by all green plants.
ATP
the principal molecule for storing and transferring energy in cells.
Autotroph
an organism that can make its own food by synthesizing organic nutrients from inorganic materials, using energy from sunlight or a chemical source to drive the process.
Cellular Respiration
the process by which organisms combine oxygen with foodstuff molecules, diverting the chemical energy in these substances into life-sustaining activities and discarding, as waste products, carbon dioxide and water.
Chloroplast
an organelle within the cells of plants and certain algae that is the site of photosynthesis, which is the process by which energy from the Sun is converted into chemical energy for growth.
Glucose
A simple sugar that is the chief source of energy.
Heterotroph
an organism that obtains nutrients by consuming other organisms.
