Photosynthesis & Cell Respiration Flashcards
In which type of cell does photosynthesis take place?
In the Plant cell
In which cell structure does photosynthesis take place?
Chloroplasts
What is the energy input in photosynthesis?
Sunlight. Sunlight starts the process of photosynthesis.
What are the reactants of photosynthesis?
Sunlight, Water, & Carbon Dioxide. The sunlight energy combines with the reactants (water & carbon dioxide) to form glucose (sugar) and oxygen.
How do each reactant enter the organism during photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide - passes through the holes in the leaves called stomata
Water - absorbed by the roots & travels to the leaves
Sunlight - absorbed by chlorphyll in the leaves (which is located in the chloroplasts)
What are the 2 products of photosynthesis?
Oxygen (O2) & Glucose (C6 H12 O6)
How does the process of photosynthesis occur from beginning to end?
- Sunlight is absorbed by the cholorphyll in the chloroplast during the daytime.
- Water and minerals is absorbed through the roots & transferred to the chloroplasts in the leaves.
- Carbon Dioxide enters the leaves through the stomata.
- The water & carbon dioxide combine with the light energy to create Oxygen and Glucose (sugar) .
- Oxygen is released as a waste product. Glucose is stored in the plant.
What is photosynthesis?
The process plants use to make their own food.
In which type of cell does cellular respiration occur?
Plants & animals cells
What is cellular respiration?
A process by which cells break down glucose to produce useable energy.
In which cell structure does cellular respiration occur?
Stage one: cytoplasm
Stage two: mitochondria
What is cytoplasm?
The fluid that fills the cell
What is mitochondria?
The powerhouse of the cell
What happens in stage one of celluar respiration?
Glucose is broken down in smaller molecules relesing a small amount of energy
What happens in stage two of celluar respiration?
Stage two occurs in the mitocondria when glucose and oxygen are mixed to produce ATP
