Photosynthesis (Term 3 2022) Flashcards

1
Q

What is the definition of photosynthesis?

A
  • Photosynthesis is the process that takes place in the chloroplasts of plants, using sunlight to synthesize glucose from carbon dioxide and water.
  • Photosynthesis involves the green pigment chlorophyll and generates oxygen as a by-product.
  • The glucose serves as chemical energy for the plant.

Q

What are chloroplasts?

A

Chloroplasts are one of the organelles in a plant cell and are referred to as the site of photosynthesis. They contain chlorophyll which absorbs light energy. The chlorophyll reflects green light, which gives chloroplasts their colour.

Q

What is a cell wall?

A
  • Provides strength and supports the cell by giving it shape.
  • It is made from glucose bonded together in long chains (cellulose)
