Physical Enviroment - Natural Hazards - Tectonic Hazards Flashcards
Tectonic Plates
Slabs of the Earth’s crust that float on the mantle
2 types of crust
Continental and oceanic
Continental
Thicker crust (30-50km) and less dense
Oceanic
Thinner crust (5-10km) more dense
Three types of plate margins
Destructive Margins
Constructive Margins
Conservative Margins
Destructive Margins
Where two plates are moving towards each other
Oceanic + Continental = Oceanic in mantle creating volcanoes and ocean trenches
Continental + Continental = Ground folded upwards creating mountains
Constructive Margins
Two plates move away from each other. Magma then rises, cools and forms land/new crust
Conservative Margin
Two plates move sideways against each other or in the same direction but at different speeds. No crust is lost or gained here
